Planning your first trip to Mauritius in 2027? You're in for something special.
Mauritius is known for its turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches, and luxury resorts. But beyond the beautiful coastline, our island has so much more to offer: a fascinating history, diverse cultures, delicious street food, breathtaking landscapes, and welcoming people.
My name is Vishal, and I've been connected to tourism for most of my life.
I've also had the opportunity to travel extensively across Europe and spend time in Thailand, where I was involved in professional Muay Thai boxing.
These experiences taught me something important: arriving in a foreign country can be exciting, but also overwhelming. You don't always know where to go, what to see, or whom to trust.
That's one of the reasons I chose this profession. I wanted to help visitors discover my country while making them feel comfortable, welcomed, and well looked after.
For me, being a driver is about much more than getting someone from one place to another. It's about sharing the history, culture, traditions, food, and everyday life that make Mauritius unique.
In this guide, I'll share my personal recommendations to help you plan an unforgettable first visit to Mauritius in 2027.
"For me, being a driver is about much more than getting someone from one place to another. It's about sharing the history, culture, traditions, food, and everyday life that make Mauritius unique."
1. When Is the Best Time to Visit Mauritius?
One of the best things about Mauritius is that you can visit throughout the year. However, the experience can be quite different depending on the season.
November to April: Our warmer summer season
During these months, Mauritius experiences warmer temperatures and higher humidity. It's a wonderful time to enjoy the beaches, lagoons, and tropical atmosphere, although rain showers and occasional storms are possible.
May to October: Our cooler, generally drier season
These months tend to offer more comfortable conditions for sightseeing, hiking, and exploring the island. Some coastal areas can be windier, particularly during winter.
My personal recommendation
If you're asking me when to visit, I often recommend September, October, and November.
In my experience, these months offer a lovely balance between exploring Mauritius and spending time at the beach.

2. Where Should You Stay in Mauritius?
Mauritius may be a relatively small island, but each region has its own atmosphere. Choosing where to stay depends on the type of holiday you're looking for.
Grand Baie and the North — For entertainment and nightlife
If you enjoy restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and a lively atmosphere, Grand Baie and the surrounding northern region are excellent choices. It's particularly popular with friends, couples, and visitors who enjoy having plenty of activities nearby.
Flic en Flac and the West — For families and sunsets
The West is one of my favourite recommendations for families. Flic en Flac is known for its beautiful beach, relaxed atmosphere, and spectacular sunsets. It's also a convenient base for exploring several attractions on the western and southwestern sides of the island.
Belle Mare and the East — For couples and relaxation
If you're looking for a peaceful holiday, the East Coast is a wonderful option. Belle Mare offers beautiful beaches, tranquil surroundings, and access to lagoon and boat excursions. It's an excellent choice for couples, honeymooners, and anyone who wants to escape the crowds.
Le Morne and the South — For nature and adventure
For visitors who love dramatic scenery, outdoor activities, and natural beauty, I recommend exploring the South. Le Morne is one of the most spectacular places in Mauritius, with its iconic mountain and beautiful lagoon. It's ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurous travellers.
My personal recommendation
Wherever you decide to stay, don't spend your entire holiday inside your hotel. Mauritius has so many different sides, and every region offers something special. Some of the most memorable experiences happen when you leave the resort, explore a local village, taste something new, or discover a place you weren't expecting.

3. How to Get Around Mauritius and Avoid Tourist Traps
Getting around Mauritius is relatively straightforward, but choosing the right transportation can make a big difference to your holiday.
Renting a car or booking a private driver?
Renting a car gives you independence and flexibility. However, remember that we drive on the left side of the road in Mauritius, and some roads can be narrow or challenging for visitors unfamiliar with the island.
Booking a licensed professional driver is another option, especially if you want to relax, enjoy the scenery, and benefit from local knowledge. A good driver can help you plan your day, recommend places worth visiting, and adjust your itinerary according to your interests.
A warning about tourist traps
There's something I always encourage visitors to be careful about.
Sometimes, extremely cheap excursions come with unexpected shopping stops. Certain drivers may take visitors to souvenir shops or other businesses because they receive commissions on purchases.
My advice is simple: before booking an excursion, ask for the itinerary and confirm whether any shopping stops are compulsory.
At The Real Taxi Mauritius, I believe recommendations should be based on what is genuinely worth experiencing, not on the possibility of earning a commission. For me, trust and customer satisfaction always come first.
Let Us Take Care of Your Transportation
Whether you need a comfortable airport transfer or a personalized private tour, our local drivers will help you explore Mauritius safely and at your own pace.
4. My Favourite Excursions in Mauritius
If you're spending one week in Mauritius, I usually recommend setting aside three or four days to explore the island. This gives you enough time to discover different regions while still enjoying your hotel, the beaches, and some well-deserved relaxation.
Here are a few experiences I particularly enjoy recommending to my guests.
The North Tour — History, culture, and coastal scenery
The North Tour is a wonderful introduction to Mauritius. I recommend exploring Port Louis, where you can discover our capital's history, visit the local market, and experience the atmosphere of everyday Mauritian life. Other highlights include the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden and Cap Malheureux, famous for its red-roofed church and beautiful coastal views. It's a great combination of history, culture, nature, and scenery.

The South Tour — Nature, traditions, and breathtaking landscapes
For visitors who want to discover the natural beauty of Mauritius, the South is a must. Some of my favourite stops include Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, Black River Gorges, and Chamarel. This is also a wonderful opportunity to discover traditional Mauritian cuisine along the way. The South offers a completely different perspective of our island, with lush forests, mountains, waterfalls, and cultural landmarks.

My Special Monday Experience — Discovering Mahébourg Like a Local
This is one of the experiences I particularly enjoy sharing with visitors. Every Monday, Mahébourg hosts its traditional market, where you can discover a more authentic side of Mauritian life.
I love introducing my guests to our local street food, including dholl puri, farata, gâteau piment, boulettes, and fried noodles. Our cuisine tells the story of Mauritius, bringing together Creole, Indian, Chinese, and European influences.
Beyond the market, we can explore Mahébourg's history, visit the traditional Biscuiterie Rault when it's open, and finish the day with some relaxing time at Blue Bay Beach. For me, this is what travelling should be about: discovering a destination through the eyes of someone who calls it home.

The Five Islands Southeast Boat Excursion — A Day on the Lagoon
If you enjoy being on the water, this is one of my strongest recommendations. Many guests have told me that their southeast boat excursion was among their favourite memories of Mauritius.
Depending on the selected itinerary and sea conditions, you may discover Île aux Cerfs, the Grand River South East waterfall, historic islands, beautiful lagoons, and snorkelling spots. Some excursions also include a traditional Mauritian barbecue. It's a fantastic opportunity to appreciate Mauritius from a different perspective.

Dolphin Watching and Île aux Bénitiers — A Memorable West Coast Experience
Another experience I often recommend is responsible dolphin watching along the West Coast, sometimes combined with a visit to Île aux Bénitiers. Seeing dolphins in their natural environment can be a wonderful experience, provided it is done respectfully and in accordance with local wildlife rules.
At The Real Taxi Mauritius, we prefer working with reliable local operators who value safety, responsible practices, and genuine hospitality. This also allows us to support local businesses and offer visitors a more personal experience.

For adventure lovers, I also recommend exploring Le Morne or the Seven Waterfalls with qualified guides. These are fantastic opportunities to discover another side of Mauritius beyond the beaches.

5. Common Mistakes First-Time Visitors Should Avoid
After spending years helping visitors explore Mauritius, I've noticed a few mistakes that can affect the overall holiday experience.
Here are five things I recommend avoiding.
- 1
Choosing excursions based only on price.
A cheap excursion isn't necessarily a good experience. Always check what's included, the itinerary, and the operator's reputation.
- 2
Trying to visit too many attractions in one day.
Mauritius may look small on a map, but travelling between destinations takes time. A relaxed itinerary is often much more enjoyable.
- 3
Spending the entire holiday inside the resort.
Our beaches are beautiful, but our culture, food, villages, and people are just as important to the Mauritian experience.
- 4
Ignoring weather and sea conditions.
Be prepared to adjust outdoor activities when necessary, particularly boat excursions.
- 5
Not asking for trustworthy local advice.
Sometimes, a simple conversation with an experienced local can help you discover places you might otherwise miss.
My advice is to slow down, take your time, and enjoy each destination.
A great holiday isn't about how many places you visit. It's about the memories you create along the way.
6. My Recommended 7-Day Mauritius Itinerary
If a friend were visiting Mauritius for the first time, here's how I would recommend spending seven days on the island.
Day 1
Arrival and relaxation
Arrive in Mauritius, enjoy a comfortable airport transfer to your hotel, and take some time to relax after your journey.
Day 2
Explore the North
Discover Port Louis, Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, and Cap Malheureux. Enjoy a mix of culture, history, and beautiful scenery.
Day 3
Discover the South
Visit Grand Bassin, Black River Gorges, Chamarel, and enjoy some traditional Mauritian food along the way.
Day 4
Southeast boat excursion
Spend the day exploring beautiful lagoons, islands, and coastal attractions on a Five Islands excursion, subject to conditions.
Day 5
Dolphins and Île aux Bénitiers
Enjoy a responsible dolphin-watching experience on the West Coast, with a possible visit to Île aux Bénitiers.
Day 6
Authentic Mauritius
Discover Mahébourg, local markets, traditional food, and Blue Bay. If your holiday includes a Monday, I highly recommend scheduling the Mahébourg market for that day.
Day 7
Beach and departure
Enjoy your final moments in Mauritius, relax by the beach, and arrange your airport transfer according to your flight schedule.
Of course, this is only a suggested itinerary. I always recommend adapting the schedule to your travel dates, interests, accommodation location, and weather conditions.
For example, if your trip includes a Monday, I would rearrange the itinerary to make sure you have the opportunity to experience the Mahébourg market.
And if you prefer a slower-paced holiday, you can always replace an excursion with a relaxing beach day.
7. Why I Love Sharing Mauritius With Visitors
One of the greatest rewards of my work is seeing visitors return to Mauritius year after year.
Some guests have been travelling with us for around ten years or longer. Over time, some have become genuine friends. These relationships mean a lot to me.
When I read our Tripadvisor reviews, I'm especially happy to see visitors mentioning our friendliness, punctuality, knowledge of Mauritius, and personalized approach. These are the things I want people to remember about The Real Taxi Mauritius.
Of course, providing reliable transportation is important. But what matters even more to me is helping people feel welcomed, comfortable, and connected to our island.
I want every visitor to leave Mauritius with beautiful memories, a better understanding of our culture, and the desire to return one day.
My philosophy is simple: I don't just want my guests to visit Mauritius. I want them to experience the real Mauritius and fall in love with our island.
